Global smartphone growth rate up 78%

Today brings some good news for any iOS fans reading out there. Strategy Analytics (via PhoneArena) has released their latest study on the smartphone industry. Apple's sales have nearly doubled in Q3 2010 over Q3 2009.

Apple shipped a total 14.1 iPhones this quarter, compared to 12.2 million BlackBerries. This brings the global smartphone share up to 18.3%- handily above RIM's 16.1%. We shouldn't count the business smartphone giant out, though. They managed to expand their sales by 45% during this quarter.

The smartphone industry itself is doing quite well. Shipment rate worldwide is up 78%, year over year, which puts us at the fastest growth rate this industry has seen since the mid 2000s.
