Specifications

The Megamind - Storybook App will work on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The app sells for $2.99 and can be downloaded from the App Store right now.

In Use

Like all app purchases, you need to go into the purchase of the Megamind - Storybook App knowing what you are getting. As the name of the app states, this is a storybook, not a game. If you are expecting a game that your kids can play based on the movie, you need to look elsewhere.

This app is a digital storybook that roughly follows the storyline in the film. One of the cool parts about the app is that you or your kid can decide if they want to read the story themselves or have the app read the story aloud to the kid. As the story unfolds, there is artwork from the movie that goes with each page.

The graphics of the app are top notch and the words are easy to read. The app is surprisingly simple considering how cool the content is. When I was a kid I liked popup books because they were interactive, this book is very much like a digital popup book with scenes and sound effects from the film.

The price of $2.99 for the Megamind - Storybook App is reasonable. Honestly, I am surprised the app is this cheap considering it's branded by one of the biggest kids films of the year. If you actually bought a real book with this content, you would pay a lot more than the $2.99 the app costs.

Since the Megamind - Storybook App isn't super interactive, you need to be sure your kids aren’t too old. My 9-year-old though it was a bit boring after the first time through the story. My 6-year-old on the other hand has gone through the app multiple times. She really likes to do the read it herself option and try to make out the words. She is in kindergarten and just now learning the basics of reading so being able to see the words on the page and hear them read is a great way to help her learn.

Verdict

Pros

  • Tons of fun
  • Great graphics

Cons

  • Older kids might think the app is boring

Conclusion

My kids really liked the Megamind - Storybook App and if they want to see the movie, this app is a great way to hold them over until you can hit the theater. The read to me mode also means your kids can use the app without you even if they can't read yet.
