Google Strikes Back

Literally minutes before the Honeycomb launch event began, I pondered about the possibility of Google launching a rival to The Daily. I didn't even have to wait an hour for confirmation of these suspicions. Moments ago, CNN and Google announced iReport for Honeycomb.

It will be launching soon (along with the Xoom) and will eventually be available on all Android 3.0 tablets. Unlike The Daily, it is free. The iReport app includes up-to-date headlines (pulled from CNN) and access to HD videos. It has all the 3D selection menus you'd expect out of a Honeycomb app, and also allows users to view a live stream of broadcast news content from across the world.

Google is just going all out against the iPad. Everything about this event was focused on pumping up the Xoom / Honeycomb and taking as much wind as possible out of the iPad's sails. Android users only had to wait a few hours between oggling screenshots of The Daily and being presented with their own "free" alternative.
