Second Wave of Motorola Xooms Now Arriving at Best Buy

First wave sold out in minutes, but wasn't very large.

Motorola's CEO is on-record as claiming that the Xoom sales started off "relatively well". Relative to what he didn't say. So I took to the streets (read: the yellow pages) and called up every Best Buy in North Texas, plus a bunch in Austin and out in East Texas. Here's what I found:

1. The first wave of Xoom's sold out incredibly fast. The Austin stores were dry "in fifteen minutes" and Dallas stores started running out within an hour or so of sales. Employees report "a ton of buzz" around the new tablet.

2. Though the Xoom has been selling fast, relatively few units have actually moved. Most of the stores I contacted received five or fewer units on launch day. Which wasn't even enough to cover all the pre-orders, in some cases.

3. A few stores have already started receiving their second wave of Xoom shipments. This wave seems to be larger. One store was already down to four (from about ten) and another store reported as having ten on hand. The local Dallas warehouse had 141 Xooms in stock, with most of those expected to roll out to local outlets this evening.

So, if you've been eyeing a Xoom of your own, tonight may be the night to get one. You'll want to be quick about it though, because the world's first Honeycomb tablet is selling fast. And there aren't a whole lot available to begin with.
