Dell Inspiron R Series Notebooks Debut

Switch tech lets the user change lids at will

Dell is now the second largest computer shipper in the world thanks to the iPad beating the netbook market down and Dell's strong business sales market. Dell sells a bunch of consumer notebooks as well and the company has added a new series to its line for consumers looking for style and customization.

Dell built its empire partly on allowing the user to customize their PC with just hardware they want and then moved into letting users customize the style of their notebook. Dell's new Inspiron R series takes that customization to a new level with new tech called Switch that allows Design Studio lids to be easily swapped. That means that you can get one look for spring, another for summer and so on. That is a pretty cool idea and means that users will like the style of their notebook for all seasons.

The switch lids are offered in 25 new designs with bright colors. The lids aren’t all that is cool about the new notebooks though. The machines have second gen Core processors from Intel making them powerful. Battery life is up to 13 hours on the 15R with the optional 9-cell battery and they have USB 3.0.

The R series comes in 14, 15, and 17-inch sizes with HD resolutions. Available processors include Core i3, i5, and i7 offerings. The 14R series starts at 4.94 pounds and 6-cell batteries are standard on the series. They all have SRS premium Audio and HD video performance. The line also supports Intel Wireless Display for shooting 1080p video and 5.1 sound without needing wires.

Other features include support for 3D films when fitted with the optional Blu-ray drive. They also have HD webcams, chicklet keyboards, and lots more. The 14R starts at $579.99, the 15R starts at $529.99, and the 17R starts at $579.99. Different Switch lids are $39.99 each.

“Our Inspiron R models equipped with 2nd gen Intel Core processors deliver the ultimate in entertainment and mobility and because customers value both performance and style, the eye-catching lids are designed to suit your mood or style at any given moment,” said Sam Burd, vice president Dell’s Consumer & SMB Product Group. “With the Inspiron-R series, we’re living up to our heritage of delivering the performance you need to do more, and with SWITCH by Design Studio, you can look good while doing it,” Burd added.
