Google is rumored to unveil the next major Android OS release.

Today Google is launching the Google I/O developer conference. What the WWDC is for Apple developers, Google I/O is for Android developers. It is the most important event of the year for developers to learn about what is next. Google is rumored to take the wraps off the next major Android release. Android 4.0 (or is it just Android 3.1) is supposedly getting the nickname Ice Cream Sandwich (or just Ice Cream) and is seen to be a merger between Gingerbread and HoneyComb. In my mind Google needs to simplify the Android OS offering ASAP. Right now Tablets run HoneyComb and smartphones are on Gingerbread.

The new Android 4.0 is hopefully running on both type of devices. One unified Android OS for tablet and phone use would simplify things for developers and consumers. Apple does this with iOS to keep things simple.

Expect a plethora of Google announcements today. Come back to I4U News for the announcements expected in the morning California time.
