Apple TV sells reasonably well, but Apple has no plans to upgrade the hardware this year says analyst.

The $99 Apple TV is the perfect accessory for the iPad. This is why it sells. All other TV setop boxes struggle, besides the Roku, to enter the living room. AppleInsider reports that Apple has sold close to 500,000 Apple TV boxes in the last quarter. Apple did not break this number out in their earnings call. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from Concord Securities came up with that information. This would represent a 70% growth compared to last year.

Kuo also said that there is no evidence that Apple plans a new release of the Apple TV. There will be though iOS 5, which will also come to the Apple TV. The value mostly will be in the improved AirPlay capabilities. AirPlay mirroring will be the stand-out feature. You just can anytime through up what you see on the iPad onto a TV with an Apple TV connected.
