Is an LTE iPhone 5 closer than we think?

Yesterday we carried a rumor that an LTE iPhone is already in testing at carriers. Eventually there will be an LTE 4G iPhone, but consensus in the rumor mill suggested that this would happen in 2012 at the earliest. Now Engadget has received an image (photo removed, but of course it's out there now) from a tipster, showing that a major Apple Store got a piece of AT&T LTE equipment installed. Why the heck would they do that?

Of course there is no evidence visible in the photo that confirms that the LTE unit is actually in an Apple Store. So the whole story could also be fake, but if not it is very intriguing. Is Apple already launching an LTE iPhone 5 this fall?

We just covered another rumor that Apple is indeed starting to ship the iPhone 5 on October 7th. The iPhone 5 pre-order would start on September 30th.
