7-inch Amazon Tablet launches in October, 10-inch Amazon Tablet in Q1 2012

New supply chain rumor says that production of 10-inch Amazon tablet starts in Q1 of 2012.

The unannounced Amazon tablet is considered the biggest threat to the Apple iPad coming this fall. Since a while the rumors about the Amazon tablet suggest that the company will release two models with two different screen sizes. Digitimes reports today that the 7-inch Amazon tablet made by Quanta Computers is expected to start shipping in October. This actually contradicts this WSJ report from last month that said that the Amazon Tablet would launch before October. The 10-inch Amazon Tablet that would directly compete with the iPad is not launching this year. The mass production at Foxconn is supposed to be scheduled for Q1 of 2012.

Can a 7-inch tablet mess with the iPad? It can. Especially as Amazon will be able to offer this tablet at a considerable lower price point. We have seen reports that one of the major weapons Amazon wants to use against the iPad is price. A smaller screen makes it easier for Amazon to have a much lower price than the $499 an iPad is going for today.

I just hope Amazon is able to give their Android tablet a clean and modern design. I still think that the Amazon Kindle is one of the most ugly gadgets on the market, despite its mega success.

The details about the Amazon Tablet(s) are still very vague. Amazon is doing a great job so far to keep everything secret. It is assumed that Amazon will use Android, but not even that is sure. Rumored screen sizes range from 7 over 9 to 10.1-inches. What is clear though is that Amazon has the content eco-system and cloud services in place to effectively compete with Apple. Amazon also has collected tremendous experience with the Kindle device. I am pretty sure they know how to do a tablet right that can rattle the domination of the Apple iPad.
