Specifications

The Dexim AppSpeed Monster Truck is approximately a 1/64 size remote control truck that looks like a big rig. The truck is controlled by an iPhone app and a little sender that connects to the bottom of the iPhone. The Dexim AppSpeed Monster Truck is full function and available now for $69.90.

In Use

The Dexim AppSpeed Monster Truck is a cool looking little truck. It will work with several iOS devices that are on iOS 4.0 or higher. The truck uses 2.4GHz frequency and has a range of 12-15 meters. The charge time is 10-15 minutes. Once charge the little truck is ready to play with. The transmitter plugs into the charge and sync port for the iPhone. You can use the free app for touch control of the truck or you can use the tilt mode that steers the truck depending on what way you tilt the phone. The tilt mode was fun. The big problem I had was that I would try and stop the truck and would end up moving in reverse or going forward by mistake.

The transmitter is small and doesn't stick out from the smartphone at all. The problem with the transmitter for the car that plugs into the iPhone 4 is very hard to get the transmitter to plug into the phone with a case installed. My case is very thin and I can put my phone on my dock to charge at night without any issues with it in the case. I was able to use the transmitter without removing the case, but if I held the phone wrong or bumped the transmitter, I would sometimes loose the connection to the car.

The app also lets the truck go in pre set patterns, which are cool like spinning or dancing to music. The biggest problem I had with the Dexim AppSpeed Monster Truck was that it has very little power. It would not drive on my carpet at all. I had to take it to my tile floors to get the truck to drive anywhere. I really expected more power so that it could go on carpet. If your entire home is, carpeted chances are that you will not be able to drive the Dexim AppSpeed Monster Truck much. The electronics are also not protected against water so be careful if you take it outside.

Verdict

Pros

  • Fun to drive
  • Looks cool

Cons

  • Won't go on carpet
  • Expensive

Conclusion

The Dexim AppSpeed Monster Truck is a cool toy as long as you have hard floors to drive it on.
