The iPhone 4S is one of the first devices Bluetooth Smart Ready.

So Bluetooth 4.0 (the version that included low energy functionality) is now called Bluetooth Smart. Gadgets like Sensors will have Bluetooth Smart and devices like the iPhone 4S are called Bluetooth Smart Ready.

“Here’s the truth of the matter: Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready devices will revolutionize the way we collect, share and use information,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “In order to ensure consumers know what these extraordinary devices have to offer, we created the Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready marks. These new logos will help consumers manage compatibility, and encourage manufacturers to build their best Bluetooth devices yet.“

I really do not think that renaming was necessary. What will they called Bluetooth 5.0? Bluetooth Smart 2.0?

Besides the iPhone 4S, the new Motorola RAZR are Bluetooth Smart Ready. Expect many new phones to feature Bluetooth 4.0. Via the Bluetooth site.
