$99 Xbox is a Game Changer?

The $99 Xbox 2-year subscription rumor has raised a ton of interest. Microsoft has not confirmed or denied the report.

Earlier this week The Verge broke a story about Microsoft releasing a $99 Xbox 360 with Kinect with a 2-year contract. A $15 monthly fee would include the Xbox Live Gold Pass. So far there is no new evidence that Microsoft is really doing this. Most reports covering the story believe that the subsidized Xbox is a great idea and might be even a game changer for home video gaming.

The funny thing is that Sony and Nintendo actaully would have a harder time to copy a such a subscription model. Microsoft has always charged to access the online service Xbox Live. A subscription model that includes the hardware is pretty straight forward. For Sony and Nintendo its something completely new.

As the video game console is transforming into a media hub a subscription model like the cable companies are offering is more adequate. Xbox ownership is set to explode with the introduction of the $99 Xbox subscription.
