Google cuts 20% of Motorola Mobility Staff

Google apparently told employees on a Sunday. Seems an odd day to tell someone to get laid off.

Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billions. Mostly because Motorola's vast patent portfolio. Motorola Mobility is a struggling phone maker and Google needs to fix this to keep some additional value.

The New York Times reports that Google has told employees that 20% of the work force will be fired and a third of its 94 offies worldwide will be closed.

A third of the job cuts will be in the United States. Overall Motorola wants to cut 4,000 employees.

If Google can bring back Motorola Mobility to its hayday RAZR times will be difficult.
