In a time where fashion overrides durability its nice to see that Motorola hasn't forgotten about those of us who take our phones virtually "everywhere". Sure, there are cases you can stick your phone in to prevent exposure to the elements but ziplock bags just aren't, well, good looking!

Motorola/Nextel has introduced two new phones that offer those of us who appreciate the term "X-treme". The i305 and i530 are wrapped in a rubber shell and are certified to Military Standard 810 F for extreme temperatures, dust, vibration and shock, low pressure, humidity, rain, sleet, snow and even solar radiation.

These phones are made to perform in extreme outdoor conditions so sport loving folks as well as the construction worker down the street can utilize a phone that can handle being bumped around.

The i305 is comes in a black, one piece, 5.0 by 2.3 by 1.4 inch package and weighs in at approximately 6.6 ounces with the standard Lithium-ion battery.

The i530 offers a folding "flip" style handset (comes in black or yellow) and sizes up at 3.6 by 2.0 by 1.1 inches and weighs in at 5.2 ounces with battery.

Granted they don't offer a color screen or a built in camera but these phones are meant to stand up to abuse not papparazzi. A built in GPS function utilizing Mobile Locator allows you to find your exact location with a press of a button. Not bad considering the same GPS feature allows emergency personnel to locate you in case you happen to get lost.

What you might expect with something wrapped in rubber with high specification is a high price, however, the Nextel Website offers the i305 for around $90 and the i530 which typically retails for $125 comes with a $50 mail-in rebate. Not bad for some phones that can withstand what the world can dish out. See also a review of the rugged phones at MSNBC. currently sells the Nextel i530 with $25 cash-back.
