About a dozen companies, headed by Sony, are pushing the new Blu-ray technology. Movie and Technology Industry leaders predict considing replacing DVD next year.
For consumers, the benefit of the new format would be better image quality. Current DVDs don't have the resolution to get the most out of HDTV sets.
The Blu-ray disc has a storage capacity of up to 50 gigabytes versus the DVD-HD standard with 30GB. The Blu-ray technology is though very different from the DVD technology. Other technologies in the Game are EVD - Enhanced Video Disc and FVD -Forward Versatile Disc.
