Amazon announces in Germany the launch of its online DVD rental service.

Amazon launched DVD rental in the UK last December.
Again, like in the UK the number of DVDs per month is limited. Three monthly subscription levels are available: 3 DVDs for 9.99 Euro, 4 DVDs for 13.99 and 6 DVDs for 18.99 Euro. Additionally Amazon.de runs a promotion for rental customers, giving them 5% off on DVD purchases.
DVDs are available for rent now on Amazon.de.

Amazon did still not launch its DVD rental in the US and maybe they won't at all. Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy just said a couple of days ago, that he thinks Amazon's retail infrastructure would not work to their advantage with DVD rentals and that the cost of entry is much higher these days.

Living in Germany these days I know how much I miss Netflix.com.
The selection and the fact to get unlimited number of DVDs per month for a flat $9.99 is just great. There are services like Amango.de in Germany too that offer unlimited number of DVDs per month, but charge 1.68 Euro shipping per DVD in addition to the monthly service fee of 6.90 Euro. I currently use one of those DVD vending machines, because their is one around the corner of my place. There is no subscription and the rental fees are cheaper.
