Looks like consumers like the simplicity of recording video directly onto DVDs. Sony just announced that they sold more than one million of the disc-based camcorders.

According to market research from NPD Intellect, the DVD format now accounts for 22% of the camcorder market, double of that a year ago. Sony DVD Handycam camcorders dominate the market with 85% market share in the United States.
I still think tape and disc-less camcorders are the future. HDD camcorders from JVC show the way.
The several Sony DVD Handycams are on the market to choose from. Sony also leads the total U.S. camcorder industry with nearly 50 percent market share for all camcorder sales.
