The popular video sharing site has been blocked in Turkey, after videos popped up of people insulting former country leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Instead of just blocking the clips, a court order required YouTube to pull the site from Turkish residents.
The videos were part of an online war that erupted between the Turks and the Greeks. Each side posted several videos insulting the culture and history of the opposing country.
Ataturk is regarded the father of modern Turkey, and state law makes insults like the ones on YouTube an offense that could result in a prison sentence.
When the site is accessed in Turkey, visitors are now greeted with this message: "Access to www.youtube.com site has been suspended in accordance with decision no: 2007/384 dated 06.03.2007 of Istanbul First Criminal Peace Court".
