Rumor has it that AMD is getting ready to launch a new high-end desktop processor called the Athlon 64 X2 6400+. The processor is also rumored to be the last in the Athlon 64 X2 family according to motherboard manufacturer sources quoted by Digitimes.
The 6400+ core frequency is supposed to be 3.2 GHz with a 2MB L2 cache. Pricing is expected to be in the $220 to $248 dollar range and the part is supposed to go up against the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 which will retail for a bit more than the AMD part.
Supposedly the performance of the 6400+ is 10-15% below the E6850 and the price difference isn’t that great. If that holds true when the parts hit retail shelves we will again see AMD lagging behind Intel in performance for close to the same money. Via Digitimes
