HGST has announced the industry's highest capacity 10000 RPM hard drive. The drive is called the C10K1200 and provides 33% more capacity than existing drives aimed at tier 1 mission-critical cloud and enterprise storage applications. The drive uses a 2.5-inch form factor.
It connects using a SAS 6 Gb/s interface offering reliable data throughput and features a 64 MB cache. HGST says that the drive is also designed to consume low amounts of power. It needs under 5 W of power during idle. Consuming less power means the drive puts out less heat.
Less heat means that data centers can save money on power and HVAC requirements. The 10,000 RPM drives are shipping right now at an undisclosed price.
