The ABC Network has decided to employ a new app in order to live stream its shows. This is a novel experience since it is the first time any TV network has used such a technological platform to enhance its viewership.
Excitement is high this week as the ABC Network has started live streaming its television contents to subscribers from New York to Philadelphia. A completely different tactic from the past ruses, this time around ABC has beat Barry Diller’s Aereo at its own game. The show will go on 24/7 and people may even watch “Good Morning America” while they move around their residence space on their iPads or iPhones.

While the two are similar in other respects, there are nevertheless fundamental differences in operational styles between ABC and Aereo. ABC is a Disney offshoot that is offering a month and a half trial period before the beginning of its official cable subscription deals. Furthermore cloud technology will be employed by ABC which makes its rates far more reasonable than those of Aereo.
ABC will expand soon enough once the coast is clear. The environment is right just now yet there are a few hassles such as the tangle of advertising and business ethics matters that need to be resolved. From there onwards it will be smooth sailing. The basic feature that makes the whole deal cost the subscribers an amount that is peanuts is the $1000 Linux box with the help of which they can catch the live stream shows.
ABC will face the usual shrewd opposition in the licensing arena, according to the New York Times. Yet it is sure to take it all in a stride and accomplish its goals with one hand tied behind its back. UpLynk happens to be the trans-coding server which allows ABC’s programs to go on the live feed. Ken Brueck, one of the founders of upLynk says that it is only a matter of time before affiliates join the live stream.
Previously the procedure necessary to achieve this feat of intricate technology and human cooperation was too costly to even consider thinking about. Now all this has changed. Amazon’s EC2 creates the conditions for trans-coding and so the scenario of millions of dollars of wastage has been averted. The new and cheaper version has made it all as simple as apple pie.
Aereo meanwhile has both certain advantages and a few disadvantages in this neck-to-neck rivalry. While particular complications make its operations a bit costly it can at least serve different fare from ABC. The channels it can broadcast are a world apart from those of the ABC Network. Only time will tell which network gains the lead in this competitive gamble for the sake of catching customer attention.
