The new CEO of Zynga, Don Mattrick has taken over Mark Pincus position at a crucial time. Parvenu King has achieved the #1 spot on Facebook which is detrimental to Zynga’s reputation.
Don Mattrick was the Microsoft's head of Xbox team. Mattrick left Microsoftis and join Zynga as CEO. King.com is the maker of Candy Crush Saga. The game reached a record number of hits on Facebook thereby derailing Zynga’s top position. Zynga had for half a decade maintained its supremacy on Facebook. But now that is no more. To counter this trend, it has employed Don Mattrick. He formerly headed Microsoft’s entertainment division. Don is taking over from Mark Pincus, who will carry on as the chairman. The whole effort is geared towards improving revenues and growth figures. Zynga has seen its shares fall by more than 66% since the past two years. This has been a deadly financial blow. Don Mattrick will start working as CEO on 8th July and Zynga officially announced it a 'Big Day'.
Furthermore, the public craving for its game “Mafia Wars” has taken a nosedive. Don Mattrick in a way faces two tasks: winning the lost Facebook supremacy and attracting players who prefer mobiles with labels made for smart phones and tablets. Someone spoke of how these actions are almost like turning a seagoing ship around. It had been travelling in the opposite direction. And besides, mobiles are a whole new ball game. It’s different from anything Don Mattrick has ever tried to master. He will definitely need all the luck on his journey to fix Zynga. Mark Pincus meanwhile is taking a backseat. His hard-nosed style seems to have failed in the long run.
Among the popular apps by Zynga are “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “FarmVille”. Part of the reason for its downfall is that it relied too much on old time games. Due to its old-fashioned philosophy Zynga lost more than a 100 million players in the span of a single year. This opportunity was picked up by King.com which took over the 100 million lost souls. Don Mattrick will really have to lift Zynga up by its bootstraps. He will be relying on his past experience. Zynga’s shares rose by 10% after Don Mattrick joined it. Meanwhile, Zynga’s gain is Microsoft’s loss. In a letter to employees at Zynga, Don Mattrick explained how he had always admired Zynga. He also spoke of how he would love to personally meet all the staff in a very hands-on manner. According to Don Mattrick, Zynga had a lot of potential. He sees it as a challenge and hopefully he will see it through the rough times.
