This morning's CLW report about working condition at Apple's China supplier Pegatron has also confirmed the existence of low-cost plastic iPhones which are under initial production in limited number.

The rumors about Apple to build low-cost iPhones with plastic bodies are confirmed now. The labor rights abuse report of China Labor Watch that comes out this morning points towards the initial production of low-priced plastic iPhones. It states that low-cost iPhones with plastic covering are actually under production but in limited numbers. Mass production is not yet begun.

CLW's Investigative Report of Pegatron Technology (Shanghai) states, "Pegatron primarily assembles cell phones and tablet PCs for Apple. Its assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones." While digging deep into the report will show a Pegatron's worker statement on page 30. His work is to assemble back covers of phones. He states,

"The task on my assembly line is to assemble back covers. The assembling of other parts of the cell phone, including the final assembly into a finished product, is assigned to different production facilities, each facility partitioned off by heavy curtains so that workers in different departments are isolated from one other. Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple. The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slowly paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedules."

From this statement of Pegatron worker, it is actually very clear now that Apple's low cost iPhones having plastic casings are under production. Yet the initial supply will be limited to check the market response. All the rumors and speculations about low cost plastic iPhones are now come true. We have to just wait for the launch of these models to see what these will actually look like.
