ZTE Plans to Launch Bigger Firefox OS Phones in US Next Year

ZTE is planning to launch its second generation of Mozilla's Firefox OS Phones with bigger screen and faster dual-core processors in US in early 2014.

World's 5th largest smartphone maker ZTE is planning to launch second generation of Mozilla's Firefox OS smartphones in US next year. ZTE Open is the first Firefox OS phone. The Chinese smartphone maker will double the speed of these new Firefox phones with dual-core processors and bigger screens.

This new faster and bigger ZTE Firefox OS phone is set to arrive in the first half of 2014 while its price will remain low. ZTE is mostly selling Android based handsets. But the giant Chinese firm is hoping to get big sales for the Web-based Firefox operating system phones. 100,000 units if ZTE Open Firefox OS phone have been sold so far. This number is though very less as compared to Androids and iPhones but ZTE is still happy and hopes to hit 200,000 sales mark soon

ZTE's EVP He Shiyou said, "On the whole, the sales have been pretty good, especially on eBay and with third-party retailers. The demand has exceeded supply, but we also purposely did not want this first generation product to have a large scale."

Developing markets were the first target of low-end ZTE Open phones like Latin America. But this Firefox OS phone was made available in the U.S. and U.K. markets later at price of $79.99 and £59.99, respectively. This handset was quickly sold out in these markets.

He Shiyou also said that, "These Web-based OSes will develop fast, particularly because of 4G LTE technology. Higher-speed networks means that HTML5-based apps can load quickly on phones, removing the need to download and install native apps, He added. In the future, the app store business model will be no more," he said. "The Firefox OS is still new, and it will bring an entirely different user experience."
