Valve has just introduced its Steam Controller, a handheld device for its living room gaming console. It comes with thumb pads and is very easy to use.
The previous revelations from Valve came this week. They comprised the SteamOS and Steam Machines. But now the Steam Controller is finally here. A dream device for gamers everywhere, this gadget is so gorgeous it will give a thrill to anyone who has the luck to get his hands on it.
It looks ordinary enough when seen from afar yet has dual click-worthy track pads. These lend access to high resolution on a par with a PC mouse. In the center lies a touch screen that allows control and maneuverability. You can turn page upon page if you want to. Besides the scroll menu there is a radial dial. Navigational maps and input modes are to be accessed here.
Looking further on, haptic sensors are buried beneath every feature. These make the device super-accurate. With over 16 buttons, most of which lie in the front, it is a marvel of electronic engineering alright. The whole experiment is basically a reinvention of the gamepad. The mechanics of this gizmo have left traditional approaches far behind.
Some have even questioned the sanity of such an avant-garde device but than that is precisely the style of weird science. It will run in synch with the entire Steam repertoire of features. And it has higher fidelity than previous devices. Hopes are high that it will outperform more conservative gaming consoles by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
