Top Tech Stories for October 2, 2013

There's a lot going on in the technology world today and I'm going to run down some of the top stories of the day, if you've been busy and haven't had a chance to catch up on what's going on this is the list for you. One of the big happenings today is that Microsoft is now shipping the next generation Surface Pro 2 tablets. The tablets are available in 29 markets and launched yesterday.

By most accounts, the original Surface Pro tablet was a bit of a failure, it remains to be seen if the new tablet will fare better. I sort of doubt it, but you never know. Next up is very good news for German users of iOS devices.

About a year and a half ago, Apple lost a suit in Germany having to do with patent infringement for its push e-mail service. Motorola won the case and was granted an injunction that prevented Apple from using push e-mail within the borders of Germany. Apple now has now put up a massive $135 million bond and has been cleared for the time being to begin using push e-mail service again.

If you're one of the hoardes of gadget fans that picked up the Google Chromecast device to shoot video from your tablet or smartphone to your TV, some good news has surfaced today. The Hulu Plus streaming service app has been updated for the iPad and Android devices allowing you to watch Hulu Plus content on the TV in your living room. An app for the iPhone is said to be coming soon.

Another new bug was discovered in iOS 7 having to do with iMessage. Some users have complained that after upgrading to the latest operating system the iMessage option becomes inactive. Apple has said that it will fix the problem soon so if you're having a problem with iMessage, you aren't alone.

An image of what is claimed to be a gamepad controller for the iPhone has turned up wearing Logitech branding. There are a lot of iPhone gamers out there looking for a decent case to add physical controls for their favorite video games. It would be pretty cool if such control turned up from Logitech since the company is very well known in the gaming accessory market. No official announcement about the game case has been made by Logitech at this time.

Microsoft has officially started taking pre-orders for Windows 8.1. The operating system will officially be available on October 18 and can be pre-ordered now for $119.99. The catch here is that users on computers currently running Windows XP or Windows Vista cannot upgrade directly to Windows 8.1. Those users will have to purchase Windows 8 and then get a free upgrade to Windows 8.1.

A staggering statistic about Apple has been making the rounds today that claims Apple holds 10% of all be available corporate cash in the United States. Apple is sitting on a cash stockpile of about $147 billion while the entire US corporate cash stockpile is one $1.48 trillion.
