Ford chief, Alan Mulally was slated to be the main man for Microsoft. He will be a sort of caretaker CEO who will train a group of people to take over the work from him later on. The hireling who will be the major worker in his tutelage will be Satya Nadella, who is an insider at Microsoft. This is how things are taking shape.
Among the criteria that are being looked for in the newcomer are management of complex firms and the ability to thrive on chaos in a kaleidoscopic and competitive marketplace. The capability of showing results is paramount too. Besides Mulally and Nadella, the only other person to make it into the head honcho list is Tony Bates.
Tony Bates is of British provenance and he fits the bill. While Mulally is a temporary choice, Bates would be a slightly risky choice that may take Microsoft places where no one else has gone before. Bates has several qualities and the experience to back them up. He was an executive at Cisco where he managed a large staff along with $20 billion.
He has technical know-how, even if he doesn’t have a diploma in technology. He has a thorough knowledge of mobile and communications via time spent operating Skype. And finally, he happens to have both inside experience at Microsoft as well as the external wisdom of the world.
Bates is a very amiable and friendly personality. However, he has not been a CEO of any company previously. Nor does he have any personal contacts with Bill Gates who is the founder of Microsoft. We will just have to wait and see is he gets selected in the end.
