This Time, Scalia Was Right

Source: Miller-McCune

Justice Antonin Scalia and I don’t agree on much. My Supreme Court idols are Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor. I think women are people and corporations are not, that gun control is constitutional and discrimination is not. While I worry about the rights of minorities in America, Scalia crafts opinions stacking the deck for the majority. And, of course, I’m gay, a state of being Scalia likens to “bigamy, adultery, adult incest, bestialit ...

Celebrating the Fourth of July in Dissent

Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In 2000, I had the privilege to be present as film and television legend, Norman Lear, and his wife Lyn, purchased an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. You may have not realized it is possible to purchase a fundamental document of democracy, but there is one remaining copy of the Dunlop Broadside for private sale, and the Lears bought it. Because, as Norman says, it's "the people's document," their goal was ...

Supreme Court Justices Sometimes Do Agree: Your Privacy Matters

Hobby Lobby: The Real Religious Exemption Fight Is Yet To Come

Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In the months before today's U.S. Supreme Court decision, some Hobby Lobby supporters posed questions like the following: Should an orthodox Jew who owns a little corner deli be required by law to sell pork or risk losing his deli operator's license, and should he also be required to hire non-Jews to certify that the food is kosher? Of course not, but Hobby Lobby is no little corner store, and the case had nothing to do with wh ...
