Microsoft recently sent out a big press release announcing it’s 3 million Xbox Ones sold in 2013, and it listed a whole bunch of upcoming games along with it. There was one major omission, however — the barely-teased next Halo game. A PR manager from Microsoft sets the record straight. The next  Halo is definitely coming out this year:

Rest assured your next Halo journey WILL begin in 2014. ,” tweeted Rob Semsey.

Halo for Xbox One will square off with Naughty Dog’s next Uncharted game — while they’re very different games, they’re arguably the biggest tent-pole franchises that each of these companies have. It makes sense for Sony and Microsoft to release them in 2014, as well. The first holiday season for a console tests the waters — hardcore gamers and the financially flexible gobble up available units regardless of what they can actually do with them. There have been some worthwhile games released for both PS4 and Xbox One, but all in all, neither is ready yet.

Halo and Uncharted announce the second holiday season, the real test of any new console. At that point the core is sated, the kinks are worked out, the price may be a bit lower, and the machine has started to develop a decent back catalog of games. Manufacturers save their big exclusives to lure in the slightly more skeptical consumer at this point.

Aside from the economics of console release, we know very little about this game, save a single trailer in which Master Chief wears rags, for some reason. Maybe he got cold underneath all of those shields, armors, and cybernetic enhancements? We can expect better graphics and a new story, naturally. I personally felt that Halo 4 had started to feel pretty tired, and it may take more than a graphics upgrade to breathe fresh life into the franchise. This is Microsoft’s golden goose, and hopefully it and 343 studios have been caring for it like they should.

Hilariously, you can already pre-order this game. You can find it on Amazon under Halo – Xbox One, complete with entirely imaginary box art. The rest of Microsoft’s list is looking pretty nice, as well. It should be a good year for games.
