Prison for Starving Girl: Dad Sentenced

A 42-year old man in Wisconsin was sentenced to five years in prison for reportedly starving her daughter. Dane County Circuit Judge Julie Genovese announced the decision on Wednesday.

The man insisted that his daughter is suffering from severe emotional and psychological problems, adding that his job as a trucker kept him out of the house a lot, leaving him clueless about her daughter's condition.

"There was no master plan against my daughter. I was bailing water from a sinking boat with my bare hands," he pleaded.

But Judge Genovese ruled that he failed to accept responsibility for her daughter. "What I think you did was put your head in the sand. It's your job as a dad to see it and you didn't. Really, the buck stops with you," Genovese responded.

The father is convicted of the following felonies: child neglect, child abuse, reckless endangerment, and inflicting mental harm to a child. The identity of the father was kept a secret to protect the victim.

Apparently the girl ran away from her home  in February 2012. She told investigators that her father kept her in the basement for five years without food. Her stepmother, who is now in prison, reportedly beat her. Her stepbrother also abused her sexually.

"They made me feel like I was dehumanized a lot. It's all thanks to my stupid dad and stepmom for not giving me an education and keeping me locked up for most of my life and making me feel like I was in a scary spot in my life," she wrote to Judge Genovese.
