Mr. Ben Pon Sr., a Dutchman, was the world's first importer of VW Beetles. He brought the very first VW Beetle to America. He imported two VW Beetle models of 1949 from Germany to the US.
And in the next few years, Volkswagen brought his business to the US. Volkswagen of America opened its very first shop in New Jersey in the mid-1950s. And the VW Beetle proved to be a success. Volkswagen had sold about 35,000 Beetles by 1960.
In 1968, during the Flower Power era, Volkswagen US sold 423,008 VW Beetles. And the car became a cultural icon that year too. 1977 was the last year of the sale of the Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle in US.
But the Mexican automakers continued making VW Beetles until 2003 in spite of the fact that the VW Beetle was no longer sold in America. The Beetle returned as the New Beetle in 1998. In 2011, the third generation of the New Beetle was introduced. But it was named only "Beetle" instead of "New Beetle." VW Beetle will however always remain a historical car.
