The epidemic was caused by the consumption of spoilt cheese products. All of the people who caught the illness were of Hispanic ancestry. The listeria bacteria cause listeriosis, a disease which has severe symptoms including diarrhea and fatigue.
If left untreated it can cause the person to lose consciousness and die from complications. The government of the United States has issued various warnings to limit the spread of the disease. Certain precautions have to be taken.
Furthermore, the FDA is looking into the matter. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also collaborating with public health and regulatory officials in several states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate this multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections (listeriosis).
Such food-borne illnesses can only be stemmed by recall of the toxic food on supermarket shelves. The outbreak began in November of last year and has continued till the present month.
Among the foods that are said to be infected can be included: Mexican style cheeses, soft ripened cheeses and imported ricotta salata cheese). Besides these cheeses, the other culprit foods include: cantaloupe melons, sprouts and celery.
While investigations into the matter are underway, the company that sold these infected food products has been targeted. It is none other than Roos Foods.
A health warning has been issued regarding consumption of any of the stuff from Roos Foods. But the departmental store that had the products on its shelves has been left unmentioned by the authorities.
The fact is that cheese is already a semi-fermented and semi-spoilt product. When it is exposed to listeria germs it can easily become toxic and unfit for human consumption.
This loss of a single human life in the state of California for no other reason than unsound nutrition is sad indeed. It shows lack of responsibility on the part of the producers and processors of the food products.
