Emma was merely in her late teens whereas this man was in his forties. He tied the knot with her. And Emma happened to be the daughter of one of his right hand men. El Chapo was one of the richest criminal masterminds in Mexico. His arrest comes as somewhat of a relief.
Authorities have asked for his trial to be held in the United States where his drug tentacles were causing havoc on a scale unheard of. Although El Chapo had a gun by his side at the moment of arrest, he was so tired of running away from the police that he made no effort to resist.
When he was arrested, El Chapo was cooking breakfast for his beauty queen wife. She too was taken into custody. El Chapo and Emma Coronel have twin daughters. El Chapo had been making good his escape since some days ago. He had wormed his way into a series of subterranean tunnels beneath his bathtub.
The Mexican law enforcement officials along with their US counterparts followed him with a keen sense of duty. The monitoring equipment and surveillance systems they employed finally led them straight to his den and he was caught without a fight.
U.S. Rep Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said, "My sense in talking with Homeland Security officials and others last night is that we were able to penetrate his circle, get people within the organization to cooperate."
What fate awaits him is yet to be known. There are a host of charges that will be brought against him for playing with the lives of so many innocent people.
