Obama to End Possibility of Bulk Data Collection by NSA

After Edward Snowden’s juicy revelations, which made the US appear as a spying culprit before the whole world, the NSA is getting its comeuppance. The Obama administration is willing to curb some of the obvious excesses of this surveillance agency.

Before this decision was taken the whole standard procedure of collecting data on suspects was a slapdash methodology of sorts. Telephone conversation info was piled up in bulk quantities and examined without a rhyme or reason by the NSA.

This mixed up innocent people with those who were possible terrorists. But now this will not be done anymore. The United States wants to have a positive image as the lone superpower on the face of the planet.

"In a speech in January, President Obama said he wanted to get the N.S.A. out of the business of collecting call records in bulk while preserving the program’s abilities. He acknowledged, however, that there was no easy way to do so, and had instructed Justice Department and intelligence officials to come up with a plan by March 28 — Friday — when the current court order authorizing the program expires," according to NYTimes

From now onwards the info regarding telephonic conversations will not get automatically divulged to the NSA’s snooping and prying staff. Instead, it is the NSA which will have to make a formal request for legal access to any telephonic conversations which are alleged to lead to a foreign terrorist plot to harm the United States.

This of course radically changes the equation. It has in fact gone ahead to right the wrong that had been extant for so long. Edward Snowden’s whistle blowing activities have already caused extensive damage to US plans to keep an eye on the world.

From now onwards such patriotic firms as the NSA and PRISM will have to be very careful lest they end up being worse than the enemy they profess to be against. The pertinent and relevant information that will get handed in packets to the NSA will be very specific and need-based instead of greed-based.

The paranoid streak in Western Civilization will have thus been rooted out thanks to the wisdom and forethought of a Black American President. Obama seems to have finally chose reason over irrational thinking. This is a welcome move after the oppressive neoconservative Bush era.
