Lacey Holsworth, friend of MSU's Adreian Payne, Dies

Lacey Holsworth was an eight year old girl who had cancer. She struck up a friendship with Adreian Payne, a 6 foot 10 inch basketball player of Michigan State University, who visited her while she was hospitalized.

Lacey Holsworth and Payne shared lots of common interests such as drawing and piano playing. He often acted like a bigger brother and caretaker for the adorable and cute little blonde girl.

Lacey contracted two tumors, one which was the size of a football in her stomach and another one attached to her spine. While in the beginning they dissolved under treatment, later on there was a relapse and due to metastasis the dreaded disease spread.

Today, Lacey’s family announced with tearful eyes that she is no more among us. Lacey had a very optimistic smile that simply left you wondering what a brave and beautiful survivor she was.

Adreian Payne is simply devastated by the news. Although he took it with stoicism and upright moral fortitude, nevertheless he felt such an extreme loss at the death of this sweet angel of a girl. She was just a kid. And a cruel universe had taken her life at such a young age. It was simply unthinkable.

Payne has gone on to recount of times of difficulty in his own life. He lost his mother at the age of 13. Then two years later his grandmother too left this world for the next leaving him feeling completely insecure and helpless.

Adreian Payne also faced breathing difficulties due to small lungs but he overcame this disability by sheer will power and force of character. Payne contends that the small wonder that was Lacey Holsworth taught him the art of living. When he saw the inner strength with which she pulled on despite the ravaging sickness that was cancer, he felt that he too should never feel disheartened in life.
