Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is filing for divorce from Ashton Meem, his wife of two years, per multiple reports.
"Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is filing for divorce from Ashton Meem, his wife of two years, according to a release from the team.
"'I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce,' Wilson said in the statement. 'Clearly, decisions like these don't come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time.'
"'Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.'
"Wilson and Meem were married in January 2012. They met in Virginia, where they both attended high school, and Meem later moved to North Carolina to join Wilson at North Carolina State, where Wilson began his college career before finishing at Wisconsin.
"The Seahawks drafted Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. After winning the starting quarterback job during the preseason of his rookie year, Wilson has led the team to 28 regular-season and playoff wins, including a 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII in February."
According to TMZ, Wilson and Meem haven't been seen in public that much ever since the Seahawks won the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.
"The divorce is kinda shocking...considering the couple did a ton of charity work together -- often visiting children's hospitals during his Super Bowl-winning season.
"But truth is ever since Russell and the Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII...the couple hasn't been seen together in public much.
"The last pic we found...in in NYC walking into David Letterman's studio the day after the SB."
Upon breaking the news of his divorce, Wilson re-tweeted a statement from the Bible Scripture twitter feed which reads, "God never promises the absence of storms. He just promises to walk with us through them."
Wilso proposed to Meem on Aug. 1, 2010 when she was blindfolded and led into the presidential suite of the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary, N.C., per Arlene Hamilton-Stewart of The Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Hamilton-Stewart reveals their dog Penny played a key role during the proposal.
"White petals were strewn about, Ashton's favorite champagne and chocolate strawberries beckoned from the dining table. The doorbell rang and in ran Penny, the couple's pocket beagle.
"'She's prissy,' laughed Ashton, who was surprised to see their pet sporting a new rhinestone collar.
"'Still it didn't click,' she continued.'I read her dog tag,'Hey mom, dad has a question he wants to ask you.'
"Ashton looked over only to see Russell on bended knee. 'It was amazing! My parents were outside too, with their dog!' she exclaimed."
The 25-year-old Wilson is entering his third NFL season. He has amassed career totals of 6,475 passing yards, 52 touchdowns and 19 interceptions on a 100.6 passer rating, per ESPN stats.
