Asthma symptoms: All you need to know

Asthma, now growing to be a common disease affecting people of all ages, is very complex in nature and has diversified roots. Almost 9.3% of children and 8% of adults in the U.S have been affected by asthma. The disease can be described as the narrowing of the airways in the lungs which is made even more complex with the excess mucus production and both these combined together makes breathing a difficult task. This further leads to a number of factors which vary from patient to patient. The symptoms are not going to be the same for every patient and the presence of these symptoms also don’t guarantee that a person is suffering from asthma. There can be a handful of symptoms which describe an asthma attack; however the presence of these might not necessarily indicate towards asthma.

Coughing seems to be a very normal thing and every person has been through this but it also remains to be a very well defining factor for asthma. It is one of the most common of all symptoms for asthma which may be there even if the person is not suffering an attack. This tends to get worse at night or while down.

This is classified as a cough which is productive in nature meaning that mucus is generated from the airways as a result of coughing.

This is a word most commonly associated with asthma patients and again is a very common symptom. Wheezing is the whistle like sound which is made whole breathing and happens because air is passing through passageways which have become restricted.

Chest tightness

This happens when a person feels that it is becoming difficult for him to move air in and out of the lungs. Though chest tightness is again a common complaint with asthma patients but it also a symptom for a number of other ailments.

Chest pain or pressure

This usually comes an aftermath of an attack. During an asthma attack, a person coughs a lot and gasps for more air and also a lot of effort is required to breathe at this time. This results in pain in the chest which is felt along with some pressure on the lung tissues.

Shortness of breath

This again is a very common asthma symptom and leaves the person feeling that he/she can no longer breathe smoothly or effortlessly.

Fatigue or tiredness

This symptom is most likely to affect those who suffer from the nocturnal asthma which usually flares up at night. For those who suffer from nocturnal asthma, the coughing and hacking can also occur in between sleeping and it disrupts the sleep. The lack of proper and peaceful sleep leaves the person tired and fatigued.

Apart from these major symptoms, some lesser common but equally important symptoms might include difficulty talking, especially during an attack, chest retractions, anxiety and panic, pale and sweaty face and bluing of nails or lips.
