While Shailene Woodley is a pretty smart and superb actress, there are some areas where she lacks self-control. When she had her long ponytails chopped off for her role in The Fault in our Stars, she just broke down into hysterical tears.
It looks like Shailene is very sensitive when it comes to her tresses. Since she plays a cancer patient in the movie, based on the bestselling book, the extra hair had to go. But it was quite shocking to the actress who wasn’t used to going around without any hair on her head.
In the video released of Shailene having her hair snipped away, she is both laughing and crying. Well, talk about a mixed reaction. She exhibits some pretty bizarre behavior. At one point she wanted to take a look at the chopped off ponytails. She even made ponytail moustaches to amuse herself (as well as others) out of the shocking shearing away of her otherwise long tresses.
Watch the video below.
“For the past five years I’ve been on an I-want-to-grow-my-hair-as-long-as-possible kick … About half way through my hair-growing escapade, I began to deeply look at WHY I was so keen on creating flowing locks down my spine,” Shailene Woodley wrote in her Tumblr blog prior to her hair cut. “I finally came to the conclusion that hair, for me, was a symbol of strength … For the longest time, I was committed to never chopping it off. Cut to: now. On Saturday, it will be the shortest it’s ever been. and I feel so relieved, so ready, so dedicated.”
But after the hair, she changed her mind. “I love it. It’s so easy, man,” she told Pepole. “Not having hair, the lack of hair, even the weight on your head, reveals so much about your body’s chemistry I cannot even tell you.”
Shailene is in many ways a young talent headed for greatness. Like Jennifer Lawrence who played the role of Katniss in The Hunger Games, Shailene plays Tris in Divergent. And now with her latest role in The Fault in our Stars, she is all dressed for success.
Shailene has gone on to offer a philosophical explanation for why she became all shook up upon having those bangs cut. She said that hair is a symbol of strength. And so she felt rather weak and vulnerable without her normally flowing locks.
She missed her cascading hair. But some good has come from this tragedy of sorts. The cut hair is being donated to a children’s charity. The very role Shailene is playing in the movie of a cancer victim is the motif in real life to boot. A cancer survivor will get Shailene’s hair.
