California Chrome comes up a winner in the Preakness race!
If California Chrome wins the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, he will be the first horse to win a Triple Crown since 1978. He won the Kentucky Derby on May 3rd. The chestnut foal does not come from winning stock, like previous winners, and that makes the victories just a little sweeter for the owners.
Steve Coburn and Perry Martin purchased his mother for $8,000. Called "a dumb ass" for buying a single-race winner, the duo named their company Dumb Ass Partners, and believed in producing a winning horse. But many people are wondering who really falls in the dumb category now.
Trainer Art Sherman told Fox News that he hopes the horse wins Belmont Stakes, because "I'm old-school" and "The Triple Crown means so much."
Adding in California Chrome's $1.5 million winnings at Preakness means he has earned approximately $3 million dollars in the past two races. Raised on a California farm and named after pulling words out of a pile, the lack of pedigree does not seem to bother the people who work with Junior, the family's nickname for the animal. Not even a slight cough stopped the team, or the champion, from the win.
If he wins the Belmont Stakes in 3 weeks' time and makes history, no one will even notice his background anyway.
