The Beast is going to make its closest approach to the earth, it is going to travel at a speed of up to 31,000 mph (14 km/s) which is 17 times faster than a shot from a high-speed rifle
A newly found asteroid, which has been nicknamed as “The Beast” is going to cross earth this weekend. The asteroid 2014 HQ124 is going to flyby earth on June 8th Sunday and it is reportedly the size of a football stadium. However, the asteroid poses no threat to the earth and is not going to hit the planet. NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, which is a sky-mapping space telescope, was able to spot this Beast for the first time on April 23rd. The scientists at NASA have told that this giant asteroid is 1,100 feet (352 meters) across. These scientists are from the Asteroid Watch program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. And have been watching the asteroid since it was found.

According to a Slooh representative, when The Beast is going to make its closest approach to the earth, it is going to travel at a speed of up to 31,000 mph (14 km/s) which is 17 times faster than a shot from a high-speed rifle. It will be closest to earth on Sunday at 1:56 a.m. EDT (0556 GMT) at three lunar distances away. According to Berman, it is not such a satisfactory thought that an asteroid of this size which is going to pass so close by the earth was only spotted less than two months ago.
“HQ124 is at least 10 times bigger, and possibly 20 times, than the asteroid that injured a thousand people last year in Chelyabinsk, Siberia,” Berman said in a statement. “If it were [to] impact us, the energy released would be measured not in kilotons like the atomic bombs that ended World War II, but in H-bomb type megatons.”
