Honorary Dame Angelina Jolie Dedicates Life To Foreign Policy

Angelina Jolie is now considered an honorary dame.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday Honors were released on Friday, June 13, 2014.

The monarch made sure to award the American actress for her work in UK foreign policy and end war time rape and sexual violence to women.

As an honorary dame commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Jolie has no right to use ‘Dame’ in front of her name due to nationality, but title use doesn’t diminish the reasoning.

Jolie’s heartfelt reply proved why the queen felt the need to list the actress among the 1,000 people this year.

For at least the past two years, the Changeling star has worked beside British Foreign Secretary William Hague for the past two years to work towards ending sexual violence against women.

At the launch of four-day International Protocol this week, held in London, she discussed what survivors for wartime sexual violence want. “And above all, the right to see their attackers held accountable in a court of law.” A proponent for change as a U.N. Special Envoy, the 39-year-old mother has remained steadfast in creating a better world.

In her acceptance speech to the damehood, she showed the truth of why she has dedicated her time, passion, and status to such a hard, brutal topic.  British network ITV printed the Oscar-winner’s acceptance speech early Saturday morning in the update “Stephen Sutton, Angelina Jolie and Daniel Day-Lewis in Queen's Birthday Honours list.”

"To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.” Continuing on, she made it clear “working on the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself.”

Unlike some celebrities with short attention spans, Jolie acknowledged the slow wheels of progress. "I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."

USA Today reports that she is the first American woman to receive the honor. “Angelina Jolie gets prize almost as good as Oscar” writer Maria Puente lists quite a few notable American men who have received the knighthood equivalent. Names like Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates, former president Ronald Reagan, and Bob Hope pepper the list, but no woman has broken the ceiling. Until Jolie.

What does this mean for future women advocates? Hopefully a lot of good, positive things.

As the brunette bombshell uses her celebrity power and status to direct change, little girls and teens are seeing direct change in the world around them.

Perhaps the future will hold more change through better equality in safety and less sexual violence because of Angelina Jolie showed the possibilities with true power.
