Diet queen pleaded guilty before the judge and said that she was extremely sorry for what she had done. She had never meant it to end this way.
"I am so remorseful for this," she told the judge. "It was never my intent to do anything inappropriate my entire life."
Haskell began her story from television and later on became diet queen to the stars. Her company Balanced Health sold StarCaps which contained ingredients which were dubious as regards health.
Bumetanide was the culprit in the pills. Haskell has gone on record to say that she was unaware that this drug was banned by the law.
Bumetanide had steroid-masking effects. And it was being used by football players on a regular basis. Haskell is reported to have said that she is surprised that there was such a thing in the product.
StarCaps was the issue in the suspension of six players, way back in 2008. Two others got suspended the same year for testing positive for bumetanide.
Haskell went bankrupt due to the charges against her and the players never forgave her. They filed lawsuits against her for bringing shame upon them.
"I'm still to this day shocked anything was in it," she said.
Meanwhile, the NFL bears part of the responsibility too. The NFL had been aware of the presence of bumetanide in StarCaps since a long time. Yet it had not informed the authorities regarding this.
It seems that the various people and agencies involved in this drug scandal were all partially responsible for the breach in trust and transgression of lawful boundaries.
Things can go from diet-related to drug-related in a matter of minutes. And this is precisely what happened in case of Nikki Haskell and StarCaps. Her health company is in tatters for all purposes and she faces time in prison.
