When fans go to the theater to see a Tom Cruise feature film -- they're generally under the impression that he's going to wind up being the main action star of the movie. With the new movie "Edge of Tomorrow" that's not entirely the case this time with Cruise.
Cruise decided to take the role of the guy that ends up starting off as the weaker role lead who has to overcome taking each beating after beating on the big screen.
“We came up with the idea of my character being kind of an anti-hero, not a soldier,” Cruise told MTV News on the red carpet for the film. “A coward, and not ashamed of it either.”
So if Cruise spends a lot of the movie as a coward, who does the ass-kicking? Clearly, it’s the one and only Emily Blunt.
“Emily is the one who is a soldier,” Cruise explained, “so you have this very unique relationship.”
“In many violent ways, mercilessly,” Blunt said. “It was really exciting. I would laugh after each take, just at Tom’s face, going ‘Oh c’mon.’ ”
With so many times killing arguably the biggest movie star on the planet, Blunt had to have a favorite.
“I sort of liked the casual one where I just don’t look and I just kind of shoot him like that,” Blunt said. “It’s sort of like, oh God, it’s so boring. I can’t be bothered.”
In an interview on the 'Conan' show with Conan O'Brien, Blunt admitted to almost accidently killing Tom Cruise on the set of a driving scene. The first attempt went OK, but the second time around, Blunt's driving crashed the two actors right into a tree.
"I almost killed Tom Cruise!" the actress said with a laugh. "When I first heard him say 'brake!' (while I was driving) in my head I went, 'oh shut up,' as if I thought I knew more about stunt driving than Tom Cruise."
Cruise stars in the movie, directed by Doug Liman, as a military officer who's nearly immediately killed while in battle against a vicious alien race. But instead of dying for good, he finds himself in a time loop that continuously brings him back to the fight.
As for Blunt's next film, it is rumored she is up for a role in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie. Although Director Zack Snyder hasn't made an official announcements regarding roles that Blunt may play -- the rumor mill is starting to turn that she is currently in talks with Warner Brothers to get a spot on the movie.
