While several smartphones record in UHD, the OnePlus One is the first to record in DCI 4K.
Having a 4K video recording feature on your Android smartphone isn’t considered a luxury anymore. It is becoming more and more common now but these phones use the UHD resolution for the version of 4K or sometimes even those are used which are used by 4k televisions and this is exactly four times the resolution of full HD. Apart from these two options, there is another version which is the DCI 4K and we can well imagine what this entails considering that it is used by professional cinema cameras for 4k recording. The added width creates the major difference here; whereas UHD is 3840×2160, DCI 4K is 4096×2160.

This is what makes the OnePlus One stands apart from the rest; while all those other smartphones use the UHD format, this one makes use of the DCI 4K. A sample video shot by Danny Winget demonstrates what kind of quality you should be expecting. Because of the use of a tripod, there is no shakiness in the video and you can completely concentrate on the 4K quality. In an instant you can spot out the higher resolution but apart from that the dynamic range and the colors are simply mind blowing. The phone also features a Sony sensor and it has been put to good use here.
