The 35-year-old actress welcomed her first child with husband Brian Hallisay in November, shortly after the season finale of her US TV drama The Client List.
Entertainment Weekly now reports Jennifer will return to work in the fall, having landed a series regular role on CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, about a team of specialized federal investigators.
She will play Kate Callahan, a seasoned undercover agent whose superior work at the FBI has earned her a place in the Behavioral Analysis Unit.
Show runner Erica Messer confirmed the news in a statement to EW.com, insisting the cast and crew are “thrilled” to have Jennifer on board. She also promised longtime viewers Jennifer's character won’t disappoint.
“Many of us on the show have enjoyed working with her over the years and look forward to again. We have exciting storylines planned for her character and the entire BAU team as we head into our 10th season,” Erica said.
Jennifer previously starred in The Client List as Samantha Dale Horton, a former beauty queen and mother-of-three who reluctantly takes a job at a massage parlor she discovers is a front for a prostitution ring. She featured in the series from its inception in 2012 through the finale in June 2013, the same month she announced her engagement to co-star Brian.
The couple married late last year and welcomed their daughter, Autumn.
Jennifer previously recalled Brian being a source of strength as she gave birth - so much so she even admitted he could consider switching careers.
“He was the most amazing man during labor ever!” she gushed to Us Weekly magazine back in April.
“Just solid as a rock, never wavered, never flinched, was like 'we're a team, let's do this.' He was absolutely amazing so I told him, 'If you don't want to be an actor one day you should be a doula!'" she said.
Hewitt is returning to series TV after five seasons starring on CBS' "Ghost Whisperer," which aired from 2005 to 2010. Before that, she was in the ensemble of the Fox drama "Party of Five." Her films include "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and its sequel.
