Dave Chappelle spoke about how it was a good thing that he was back on the scene. He especially commended the ordinary people for being so supportive.
He is a middle-aged Black American comedian, who left his television show about a decade ago. Chappelle admits that while he did leave the glare of the media spotlight, he still remained in the shadows.
"It's been wonderful," Chappelle told PEOPLE while backstage at the 20th Annual Essence Festival in New Orleans on Sunday. "Being back, what I've found this year is that everywhere I've gone, people have been overwhelmingly supportive."
40-year-old Chappelle has a family to support. His spouse Elaine is a very loving wife. And through her he has two sons and a daughter.
And while he took that decision a long time ago to give his immediate family some time, instead of wiling away the hours in the media machine, he says that it is good to be back on the scene after such a long time.
"I never stopped being on stage. What I did was step off of the main stage," he explains, "Because those lights were hot, and I was trying to do other things with my life."
"That kind of attention wouldn't have been conducive to raising a family," says Chappelle.
His rapport and links with the comedy routine were something which he had been sorely missing for so long. It was such a relief to be back where he belonged.
His hiatus from the limelight had led to a withering of the creative impulse in Dave Chappelle. And now that he had finally made a detour and ended up with a stint before live audiences, he felt on top of the world.
Entertainment literally ran in his blood. He could not stay away from it even if he wanted to. Way back in 2005, he had forfeited his $50 million contract and instead gone big game hunting in Africa.

It was a time of great stress in his life and he needed a break badly to be with his family and see stuff in general. Now, that all that is behind him, he has taken to the acting stage with a vengeance.
Chappelle said that he had been doing stand up comedy stints since he was very young, so it was in his genes. And the positive feedback he got from his fans was an inspirational high indeed.
"I started doing this at such a young age, that not doing it was alien." Being back in center stage "Has been a healing experience. I couldn't even tell people what it means to me. It's sincerely a pleasure to entertain."
But at some stage he decided that family came first and so he departed the scene. But, now he is back and nothing can stop him.
