Neurosky biosensor picks up on brainwaves that correlate to your ability to focus to get things done
Since the Google Glass came into public view, it has been surrounded by criticisms and though this head mounted gear has made a name for itself in the world of technology, it has done so rather infamously. The hardware which can be controlled by your voice and a sliding finger has been met with mixed feelings but it keeps on getting its developments every now and then. This time a team based out of interactive studio This Place in London has stepped forward with their plans to launch an app which is going to smooth out the way we interact with the device even further. This interaction is going to make use of the power of the mind.

The app is called MindRDR and it connects the Google Glass with another pieceof head mounted hardware which is the Neurosky EEG biosensor. This is what is going to create the communication loop in between. The biosensor here is used to pick up on the brainwaves which keep a correlation with your ability to focus. These brainwaves are then going to be translated by the app into meter readings which will then be superimposed on the camera view in Google Glass. The more you try to focus with your mind, the more the meter goes up and ultimately the app takes a photograph of what you are seeing in front of you. With a bit more focus, the meter goes further up and the picture gets posted to Twitter.
The team at This Place has come up with something so extraordinary and brilliant because it’s not every day that you get a chance to control your devices with simply the focus of your mind. However, this concept of controlling Google Glass with mind is still in its primitive stage. There are other devices out there which have been loaded with more sensors but they are pretty expensive but this one isn’t. Neurosky retails for £71 in the UK, while Google Glass costs £1,000 and the app is free.
And it is not just the concept that at its initial stages but the hook up itself is quite in the primitive stage as well. A picture shows one of the team members at This Place cooling down the Google Glass in front of an air conditioner. But this certainly doesn’t bring in a feeling of disappointment because a brilliant idea has been generated and now it simply needs to be worked up further till it reaches perfection. It can be developed further for example, to create applications to “train” people to concentrate better, or to play games, maybe to help suggest places to get a coffee when your sensor picks up that you’re tired, or for medical applications, for example for people with mobility problems.
Another idea is to build the same concept with lighter sensors which will also be easy to sue and for such a development, even Stephen Hawking has showed interest. But during this time, the team has to put up their code on GitHub for others to use and expand.
Chloe Kirton, This Place’s creative director who had originally conceived of MindRDR said that “We saw the problems. After a while your arm gets tired. You get Glass elbow. We wanted to think of something that was natural and accessible for everyone.
