232 Teeth out of 260 Teeth Extracted from Boy’s Mouth

A young Indian boy Ashik Gavai, who is just 17-year-old, had a swollen jaw. And he was feeling pain when brought to doctors in India. However, after checking his jaw, Indian doctors discovered the surprising fact that he had a total of 260 teeth out of which extra 232 teeth were present in his buccal cavity.

Doctor Sunanda Dhiware, who is the head of the Dental Department at the JJ Hospital in Mumbai, reported his case as being the rarest of its kind and a virtual world record.

The teenager had been having acute pain in his right jaw since the past year and a half. After his village doctors failed to find the exact cause, the poor boy travelled to the city in search of a cure to his excruciating pain.

"I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai," boy's father, Suresh Gavai, said.

His malady was finally diagnosed as a harmless outgrowth that caused a single gum to produce several small teeth at the same time. The innumerable small pearly white teeth started coming out one by one when the doctors operated on Ashik Gavai.

"According to medical literature available on this condition, the condition has been known to be found in the upper jaw and a maximum of 25 teeth have been extracted from the tumour. But in Ashiq's case, the tumour was deep in the lower jaw and we removed more than 232 teeth," Dr Sunanda Dhiware, head of the dental unit at J.J. Hospital, told the Mumbai Mirror.

By the end of the operation over 232 small teeth had been extracted. Such an extreme occurrence of multiple teeth has never been seen before.

Two surgeons along with their respective assistants completed the procedure of removing the countless teeth. And now Ashik has all in all a total of 28 teeth.

"While a few teeth were loose, others were in clumps which made it difficult to count. The tumour was an abnormal growth of the second molar which did not come out. It was also pressing on the wisdom tooth which we had to remove," Dhiware said.

"At first, we couldn't cut it out so we had to use the basic chisel and hammer to take it out," Dhiware told BBC. "Once we opened it, little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one. Initially, we were collecting them, they were really like small white pearls. But then we started to get tired. We counted 232 teeth .

While Doctor Dhiware has yet to see such a case, she did say that it was an exciting discovery nonetheless and she was glad to have known the boy with 232 teeth.

"While a few teeth were loose, others were in clumps which made it difficult to count. The tumour was an abnormal growth of the second molar which did not come out. It was also pressing on the wisdom tooth which we had to remove," Dhiware said.

The past cases of patients with the tumor have had a maximum of 37 teeth removed at a single time. But Ashik was unique since the deep tissue just kept on yielding tiny teeth after tiny teeth.

Ashik’s father was worried lest the pain turned out to be a sort of cancer. But now his fears have been allayed. Both father and son are happy and the fact that Ashik’s name may appear in the Guinness Book of World Records is a source of pride for his entire family.
