Becky Hammon is a six time All-Star player of the WNBA. She is all set to retire when the next season comes up. There have been other female coaches in the NBA.
Lisa Boyer is one of the most prominent one that comes to mind. Becky had the humility to acknowledge the fact that women were doing their best in every field and not just in basketball.
They were CEOs of famous companies and doctors, lawyers, surgeons and worked in lots of other fields. Hammon furthermore spoke of how the very fact that she was present on that platform and had the opportunity was due to the previous suffering and extreme pioneering work done by women.
"There's women that have trail-blazed much bigger paths and really trail-blazed the path for things like this to happen," Hammon said. "There's a lot more important things going on, in the bigger things, CEOs of companies. Women are really in every area. They're in the surgery rooms. They're doctors. They're lawyers. They're COOs."
"So even me sitting here today to be able to have the playing experience that I had as a professional basketball player, women went before me to pave that trail. So I'm really just reaping benefits of all their hard work and labor."
Becky Hammon was standing on the shoulders of giants. The critical time she spent with the team was an education in crucial skills. The head coach of the San Antonio Spurs said that Becky was a truly natural and ethical player.
"She's right in the middle and she knows how to do it and her players really respond to her," Popovich said. "She's just a natural."
Everybody held her in great esteem and she knew the ins and outs of the game. "She talks the game, she understands the game," Popovich added. "So for all those reasons you really know she's got that same sort of Avery Johnson, Steve Kerr, (Mike) Budenholzer type thing."
Becky will be facing a lot of intense pressure as assistant coach. However she said, "I'm ready to be treated as just any other assistant coach." Let’s hope she lives up to her reputation as the best there is in the field.
