The Miss America 2015 contest is off to a start with a big bang. And Miss Rhode Island fell unconscious at the very beginning of the competition at Tuesday's preliminary event.

The 2015 Miss America contest has started in Atlantic City, NJ last night, September 9 with a preliminary event. And two of the contestants won preliminary awards for their extra ordinary talents.

The Miss America 2015 was in its preliminary stage when Miss Rhode Island suffered a fugue and went into a tailspin right there on stage. Her name is Ivy DePew.

And she had contracted heatstroke and fallen in a dizzying spell while on stage. The whole audience became silent and the contestants formed a circle around their colleague who had fainted.

Miss Ohio and Miss Florida were the real winners of today’s prelims. However, things did come to a sudden halt when DePew collapsed out of sheer exhaustion and dehydration.

The medical staff was called and she was shifted to a nearby hospital. DePew is 23 years of age and she was doing fine until in the final phase she began to feel queasy and fell to the ground.

Her mother and father are with her currently as she recuperates in a hospital. "She was talking," Miss America CEO Sam Haskell told NJ. "Her parents are with her."

She has to perform her talent, which is flute, tonight at the second phase of preliminary competition. But it remains to be seen whether she will be able to compete in the state she is in later on.

Miss Florida received a grand as scholarship funds. And Miss Ohio did her ventriloquist act to entertain the crowd. She also received two grand as prize money for her winning streak.

Meanwhile, the contestants and admin are praying for Miss Rhode Island’s quick recovery. She appeared to be conscious when she was carried away by the paramedics on a stretcher.

"During tonight's preliminary competition, Miss Rhode Island, Ivy DePew, fainted on stage and is recovering in the care of medical professionals," said Sharon Pearce, president of the Miss America Organization, in a statement.

"The Miss America Organization is in close communication with Ivy, her family and her medical team and we wish her a speedy recovery." Maybe she was a little bit stressed or she may have been overly anxious.

Whatever the case, this lapse in good health may spell a repositioning of her rank among the 53 Miss Americas. But she will get a chance to regain her lost position if she convalesces and comes back stronger.

We can only wait and see if she gets over her temporary illness. Her colleagues in the competition are eagerly praying for her health and also waiting for her to rejoin them on stage.

Meanwhile, the two winners of the first preliminary night on Tuesday were Miss Florida and Miss Ohio who won in the categories of lifestyle & fitness and talent respectively.

Miss Florida is 21-year-old Victoria Cowen who won Tuesday's swimsuit preliminary award and also received $1,000 scholarship.

Miss Ohio is 22-year-old Mackenzie Bart who won the talent award for her ventriloquism and also received $2,000 scholarship.
